Makakatana Bay Lodge is uniquely situated on the banks of the Western shores of Lake St Lucia within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, World Heritage Site (formerly known as the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park). Makakatana Bay Lodge remains the only privately owned Lodge within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Reserve.

Lake St Lucia is Africa's largest natural estuary with a water expanse of 300km². On the coast, the Indian Ocean washes up on miles of golden uninhabited beaches with dune forests just waiting to be explored. Wildlife in this pristine reserve includes over 340 species of birds, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino, Giraffe, Buffalo, numerous types of Antelope, Hippo and Crocodile.

Safaris include an afternoon game drive on day of arrival and early morning walk or game drive on day of departure. Full day safaris include a trip to Hluhluwe Game Reserve or a day spent at the beach on the Eastern Shores.

Another magnificent new experience has been the Makakatana boat which is now exclusively operating in the estuary narrows where it takes Makakatana guests on an incredible cruise to view hippo, crocodile, birdlife and wildlife that habituates Lake St Lucia's estuary. The mangroves provide an indescribable backdrop to the estuary where 'little wildlife surprises' expose themselves during the cruise.
