The geology of the Erongo Mountains:
The Erongo Mountains are the eroded remains of a volcanic complex about 130 million years old. In the northwest of Namibia there are about 20 similar such complexes, whereas the Erongo Mountain is the largest of them all with a diameter of about 40 kilometres.
The volcanic eruption emptied a large part of the magma chamber and this caused the top volcanic structure to collapse. This action squeezed granitic magma from the chamber upwards into faults and fissures of the old existing rocks. Crystallization took place after millions of years. Producing all sorts of minerals and crystals, as one can now find all around the mountain area. For geologists the place is a true haven.
